Garter snakes on Newfoundland

The Western Star, a daily newspaper for Newfoundland, reported yesterday the finding of a gravid garter (presumably a Thamnophis sirtalis pallidulus) snake in a local flower garden in Saint David's. Garter snakes are not native to Newfoundland and may be introduced either by cargo or by pet owners, releasing their unwanted animals. On similar ways many other foreign animals (Neozoa) like raccoons and turtles were introduced to Newfoundland earlier. A couple of more sighting by people living in the area of the recent finding, unveiled the possibility that there is a until unknown population of garter snakes in this particular area. Regarding to Bruce Rodriguez, a wildlife biologist with the Department of Environment and Conservation in Corner Brook, it is unclear if the population will thrive or diminish again; however, climate wise the weather condition are not very different from the original habitat of this snake. It is also unclear how this new species will influence the ecosystem on Newfoundland itself. As prey-able species are rather low abundant, the garters may out-compete with other native species about the same prey. Sources: Western Star

In the moment we do experience some problems with logins on our page... we do try to figure out, what the cause is. Sorry, for any inconvenience caused. Update: The problems with the login should be solved by now. Please report if you have any further difficulties with the login. However, as a drawback we can not register new users nor allow you to change your password... hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Ab sofort findet Ihr alle Informationen zu unserem diesjährigen Mitgliedertreffen hier. Bitte beachtet speziell die Informationen zur Unterkunft, da das Zimmerkontingent nur bis zum 23.2.10 reserviert ist. Für Eure Anmeldung zum Treffen, sowie für etwaige Zimmerwünsche, die Anmeldung zum Workshop oder zu den anderen Aktivitäten, steht Euch ein Anmeldeformular zur Verfügung, welches jeder Teilnehmer bitte ausfüllt. Nur so können wir für einen reibungslosen Ablauf sorgen. Wir stehen Euch natürlich für etwaige Fragen jederzeit zur Verfügung und freuen uns darauf Euch zahlreich in Hamburg begrüßen zu können.

Maintenance finished

We are happy to announce that we have succesfully finished our maitentance work. Unfortunately, many of you will not notice any differences, as it was mostly an update of the "internal system". However, after this update the system might be a little bit faster and a lot more "future-proof".
