EGSA helps – Madita’s visit

Today, dear Madita visited me. Unfortunately, she had to learn that Thamnophis do not necessarily need two years to reach sexual maturity, and was therefore confronted with a small, unplanned litter of hybrids.
An accident that, as a beginner with the wrong information, you absolutely could not have seen coming, but from which lessons were learned.
It all started when I discovered Madita’s ads on the classifieds platform QUOKA and contacted her to offer my help.
During our conversation, it unfortunately became clear that the ‘breeder’ from whom she had obtained her animals had not responded to her request for help.
I don’t really want to call this person a breeder, but rather a propagator, because as a breeder I also take on a certain responsibility after the sale. Especially when I have given animals to a beginner and they ask me for help.
We then exchanged messages back and forth for quite some time and finally agreed on a date. The adult and subadult animals were, of course, separated well in advance of the actual date so that this would remain the only accident.
Madita travelled from Mönchengladbach, which is not too far away, with a litter of Thamnophis sirtalis similis and three small infernalis-similis hybrids.
We, that is my long-time friend Jürgen and I, then determined the sexes during a pleasant conversation so that Madita could rehome her animals with a clear conscience.
Some EGSA members are also happy to help in such cases and are willing to assist if they can. Whether it’s determining the sexes or helping with rehoming. With this in mind, if anyone is interested in the unplanned hybrids and would like to give them a responsible home where they will not be used for breeding, please contact us by email at:

Another positive side effect is that nice contacts are made along the way, and sometimes even more.
